Oops error message - Could not find special directory 'My Documents'

When opening TurboLaw or when trying to open a TurboLaw database (e.g., by clicking the File menu and choosing Open database) you receive a message about a database file not being found, or an Oops error message. If you click to show the details of the Oops error message, the Exception Message will say:

Could not find special directory 'My Documents'.

This problem is caused by an incorrect configuration of the Windows personal documents folder setting. This usually happens if the "Documents" folder is meant to be redirected - for example, to a server or network location.

This problem can be resolved by correcting the setting - this should be done by a qualified IT professional.

NOTE: Changing settings in your registry can seriously harm your computer if done incorrectly - do not attempt to change your registry settings unless you are a qualified IT professional and have made backups of your registry.

Typically, the setting in question that needs to be corrected is the Personal folder setting. This can be found in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders, in the entry for Personal. The default value for this entry is "%USERPROFILE%\Documents". If this is set to a different value - for example, to a path which doesn't currently exist - it will cause the Oops error message in TurboLaw when trying to open the Documents folder.

Once this setting is corrected, you will no longer receive the "Oops" message in TurboLaw. If you have just installed TurboLaw, you may need to uninstall it and re-install it so that the necessary files and settings are restored.
